If only I was always this funny. This is why I like hanging around the baby crowd.
Yesterday was Miles' 3 month birthday, so I whipped out the camera to take what has become my goofy traditional 3-month shots of the boys. They all have worn the same outfit (given to Strider by Aunt Katie and Uncle Dan, back when they were students and shopped at the Nike Outlet in Grove City! Thanks, Kate and Dan -- it's been a long-lasting gift, as you will see below) They also all have the same silly toy bat in the picture --and is anyone else, besides ME, impressed with myself that I have been able to find that same toy for each photo shoot? Usually this house is a black hole for toys and other items -- things disappear, never to be seen again when I actually want them!
Anyway, see if you can match up the right boy with each picture (answers below):
I'd venture to say they look like brothers!
And, thankfully, they have a sweet sister that they can take care of -- and who can take care of them! It's a big task for her, but she says she can handle it.
[Answers to the picture quiz: 1.) Colsen, 2.) Strider, 3.) Strider, 4.) Miles, 5.) Miles, 6.) Colsen ]
Who was baptized this past Sunday??
It was a big day here... not only was Miles baptized, but Strider also made his public profession of faith and joined our church! There was much to celebrate.
Here is what Pete said:
Miles today we present you before God to become a member of this covenant community, and we seek God’s blessing on you as grow and one day soon profess on your own that you are His child.
We chose your name because it means merciful, and we are reminded on this day of God’s great mercy in giving you to us. As the Psalmist says “The Lord is merciful and gracious; slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”
We have experienced God’s mercy in you already and we pray that in His mercy God will grant you His wisdom as you grow and learn how to be a man of God. We hope you always strive to fix your eyes upon Christ, for perfection is found only in him. As a fourth born you and I share a special bond, and I know you will need patience and wisdom… so I pray you will be quick to point to God’s word for truth and not to your own abilities.
We pray that God’s mercy would be on you as you grow and no doubt have struggles in this life. We pray that you would know God’s love early in your life, and like the Psalmist, would be able to say, “surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” We pray that He would show you mercy in health, in the decisions you make, and in the relationships you have.
Finally, we pray that God would use you as His instrument as you love others, and that the world would see His great mercy because of you and through you.
To paraphrase the prophet Micah, “He has shown you O little man what is good: and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Since I love patterns so much, this is one thing I have happily realized: all 4 of our children were baptized within the same 8 days of April (in different years). Here are some shots of those other special days:
Looking at these, I see that over the years, while my hair has slowly gotten longer, Pete's has disappeared!
And, our babies are growing up! We are so thankful for each of them, and continue to pray that God will lead and direct them in His love.
I've decided that Miles is just too little for his name at this point. In fact, he's not even big enough to be called Mile. Really, he's not even as big as a kilometer, but if I shorten it to Kilo, it feels just about right. So that's what I'm calling him these days.
Having said that, though, it seems like he's getting so big already! We're still struggling to capture his smiles on camera, but here are a couple half-way ones...
Our favorites, however, are when he smiles with his whole mouth wide open... like this:
It's hard to believe he's only been here 5 weeks... but as I type this he's reminding me loud and clear that he IS here and WOULD like some attention, please. Robert Frost's lines* "And Miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep" run through my head each evening right about this time!
Is this something I should be concerned about?
Colsen loves to play with Miles... He always uses his high-pitched voice and says things like, "Hi, Baby Miles. I want to kiss him. He's so cute. He's so little..." etc. But several times now he's also thrown this in: "I I love his head. I want to take his head off." And in case I don't quite get his meaning, he adds, "I want to take him apart."
So, we'll just file this under, "More Reasons to Not Leave Colsen and Miles Alone Together."
Meanwhile, Cole's had his own concerns to deal with...
The first few times he saw us change Miles' diaper, he was very alarmed to see the umbilical cord/belly button on him. He kept pointing at it and asking in a distressed voice, "What's THAT?!" We tried to explain it to him, but he was never very satisfied with our explanations.
Then, the other day I had to change Colsen's diaper, and decided to just change him downstairs since I had a box of wipes we were using for Miles there anyway. Colsen started freaking out about it though, saying, "Don't use Miles' wipes! Don't use his wipes!"
I couldn't figure out what the big deal was -- wipes are wipes, right? -- until he said, "I don't have a Bilical Cord! I don't have a Bilical Cord!"... and apparently he was afraid they were contagious or something!
Poor little guy... so much to figure out in this world.
Colsen apparently thought Miles needed this... I found it later when I went to check on him.
This isn't just a sword either... According to Colsen it's a leaf blower, and he carries it with him all the time, blowing the leaves out of the living room, kitchen, bedrooms, etc. I'm not sure which is scarier -- that he gave Miles a sword, or a leaf blower.
James very kindly came over on Saturday to get some newborn shots of Miles. He had some creative ideas, as you can see here! We have never done this with any of our other kids, but since they all look so much alike, I figure we'll just slip some of these shots in each of their baby books and tell them the pictures are really of them. We'll see if they buy that. Anyway, here are some of my favorites!
